Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors in which he will plead guilty to two tax crimes and admit to the facts of a gun charge. The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that Hunter negotiated the deal with Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss, putting an end to a multi-year investigation into his financial affairs. According to the report, Hunter will admit to failing to pay approximately $100,000 in taxes for both 2017 and 2018, with the charges being categorized as misdemeanors.

As part of the plea deal, Hunter Biden is not expected to face jail time but will be sentenced to two years of probation. Additionally, he will enter a diversion program in relation to the illegal purchase of a firearm in 2018. Sources familiar with the matter suggest that upon successful completion of the diversion program, the gun charge could be expunged from his record.

The firearm charge stemmed from an illegal purchase, as Hunter was reportedly under the influence of drugs at the time. The investigation into his taxes and gun purchase involved federal prosecutors, FBI agents, and IRS investigators, spanning over five years. Hunter’s attorney, Chris Clark, confirmed the plea deal and expressed his client’s willingness to take responsibility for the tax payment failures, attributing them to a period of personal turmoil and addiction.

Conservatives have criticized the plea deal, asserting that Hunter Biden received special treatment due to his familial connection to the president. Republican lawmakers, including House Oversight and Accountability Committee chairman James Comer, expressed dissatisfaction, deeming the plea deal a mere “slap on the wrist.” Comer reiterated his committee’s commitment to uncovering the full extent of alleged corruption, influence peddling, and bribery involving the Biden family.

Brett Tolman, former U.S. Attorney for Utah, also condemned the plea deal, arguing that it violated the Department of Justice’s own internal policies. Tolman asserted that the charges against Hunter Biden warranted felony charges rather than misdemeanors, and the diversion agreement on the firearm charge undermined the principles of justice and fairness.

The plea deal surfaces at a time when both Hunter and President Joe Biden face scrutiny from Republican lawmakers regarding an alleged $5 million bribery scheme involving Ukraine. The accusation, outlined in an FD-1023 form based on an FBI interview with a confidential human source in June 2020, suggests the involvement of the Bidens in questionable financial activities.

As this plea deal concludes the investigation into Hunter Biden, it remains to be seen how its outcome will impact the ongoing inquiries and investigations surrounding the Biden family’s business dealings and potential conflicts of interest.
